How it works

See it work.

Hold My Lid watches your agents and only keeps the Mac awake while there's real work to do.

awake
agent working

Your agent is working

Claude Code is mid-task, lid open.

Features

A keep-awake app that actually understands your agents.

Agent-driven wake lock

Holds the wake assertions only while a watched agent is working. Idle agents let the Mac sleep.

Accurate state via hooks

Lifecycle hooks report Working / Idle per session for Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode.

Battery guardrails

Configurable cut-off threshold, “only when plugged in” mode, and Low Power Mode respect.

Display control

Turn the display off on lid close, while agents run, or N seconds after they finish.

Notifications & chimes

Banner + one of 10 bundled sounds when it engages, finishes, or hits your battery limit.

Menu-bar dropdown

Live status, battery, watched-agent sessions, and pause-for-30m / 1h, one click away.

Global shortcut

Toggle the whole thing on or off from anywhere with ⌥⌘L.

Honest about limits

Same documented assertions as Amphetamine. We tell you exactly when it can’t guarantee staying awake.

Works out of the box

Knows the agents you already use.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What does Hold My Lid do?

Hold My Lid is a macOS menu bar app that keeps your Mac awake while AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini CLI are working, even with the lid closed. It holds a macOS power assertion only while an agent is mid-task and lets the Mac sleep again as soon as the agents go idle.

How is Hold My Lid different from Caffeine or Amphetamine?

Caffeine and Amphetamine are manual or process-based toggles: they keep the Mac awake while you leave them on or while a process exists. Hold My Lid reads the lifecycle hooks that Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode expose, so it knows whether an agent is actually working versus sitting idle, and it releases the wake lock automatically when the work finishes.

Does it really keep a MacBook awake with the lid closed and no external display?

Yes. Hold My Lid holds the PreventUserIdleSystemSleep assertion, the system-level assertion macOS honours for lid-closed operation, so it works without an external display or Apple’s closed-display mode. It runs on macOS 14 or later on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Which coding agents are supported?

Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode are integrated through lifecycle hooks that report a real Working or Idle state per terminal session. Cursor, Gemini CLI, Aider, and Windsurf are supported through process detection.

Will it drain my battery?

Hold My Lid ships with battery guardrails: a configurable battery cut-off threshold, an "only when plugged in" mode, respect for macOS Low Power Mode, and an option to turn the display off while agents run.

How much does Hold My Lid cost?

Hold My Lid is a one-time purchase of $9.99 (early-bird price, normally $14.99) with a free trial. One license covers up to 3 Macs, and updates are free forever. There is no subscription.

Does Hold My Lid send my code anywhere?

No. Hold My Lid never reads your code, prompts, or terminal output. It only receives the Working and Idle hook signals from your agents and calls macOS power management APIs locally.
